Special Needs Children: parents in prison
Connie Driscoll, the director of Open Corridor Schools, mentioned an article from the New York Times Magazine, January 11, 2009. It appears on the end page, "Lives", under the title "Visiting Day". It highlights a segment of our student population desperately in need but under identified or not identified at all, youngsters whose parents are absent because of their incarceration. I think consideration of this situation should be an issue at future teacher development workshops.

ReplyDeleteThere are many situations where students have issues at home we are not aware of. We need to be mindful that students come to class with often more baggage then we can imagine.
ReplyDeleteStu, I totally agree.this is one of the factors that militate students' progress. Consideration should be given to these students especially when it relates to standardized tests.
